Despite all the manufactured chaos which targets science today, we continue to explore the universe with a keen eye, an open heart, and a firm resolve. Modern scientists have to overcome more and more obstacles just to be heard. As for the scientist, where does the inspiration come from to continue their scientific pursuits?
I enjoy seeing social media posts about a certain area of science, its benefit to society, and a connection made to a particular science fiction movie or TV show. Scientific wonder continues to drive humanity’s engine forward, despite the claims of some extremist agendas. So, does science ever inspire science fiction?
Science Meets Science Fiction
Of course it does. This is where good maths and theoretical physics act as a scientific marker for further study and an inspiration to future generations. For example, wormholes feature in many sci-fi productions, and are central to a successful TV show called Stargate.

The fictional show draws from theoretical physics dating back to Einstein and Rosen’s 1935 proposal around electromagnetism and gravity. Einstein’s theory of general relatively says that matter will pass around spacetime in a bubble like behavior, not through it. Both gents declared two separated points in spacetime can map out unified lines through spacetime, which in theory can meet somewhere in the middle.
Imagination Fuelled By Science
The 1939 exploration of the original equations goes further, by suggesting a theoretically unstable connection between the two points. It may look like a Stargate wormhole–yet inwardly, it is not. It would have theoretical trouble delivering a photon through it. This work, by leading theoretical physicists of their day, did humanity a great service.
Future generations find inspiration from it, using these ideas as guides for further exploration. Some of us became scientists, some became writers, and even more just find it interesting. Imagine, if just one scientifically supported concept could inspire a writer to create a successful TV series like Stargate, what else could happen with positive consequences?
Past Science Connects To A Better Future
Will science fiction viewers of TV shows or movies become interested in related science fields? Maybe sci-fi book lovers will do the same thing? I think both happen daily. Like in my forthcoming web serial, Hindsight Station, science fights to preserve a future for humanity through technological solutioning.
The thirst for knowledge, the quest for understanding, and the will to survive never clouds future direction. Tomorrow’s world, both in science and science fiction, gets built today. One day, a Jack Fong in the real world will be driven by such noble intentions, and chart a course to the stars. The associated direction brings us forward into a realm of awareness, collaboration, and togetherness, which ultimately will befit a spacefaring species.
